How To See Auras

One of the questions I get asked more than almost any other is this: "Carolyn, can you teach me to see auras?"

The answer is yes. Anybody can train their eyes to see auras. And the tool I recommend to get started is probably already sitting on a bookshelf somewhere in your house.

First, what is an aura?

Your aura is one of your energy systems, like your chakras. It surrounds your body in seven layers that get lighter in texture as they go out. It protects you, and it changes in color, shape, and intensity depending on the emotions you're carrying, a little like a mood ring.

Anything that makes you feel happy, strong, and connected to your best self automatically strengthens your aura. Anything that leaves you feeling low and discouraged weakens it. (If this whole world of energy is new to you, start with what energy healing is and why it matters.)

The unusual tip: grab a Magic Eye book

Remember those Magic Eye books, the ones where you soften your gaze and a hidden 3D picture pops out? That relaxed stare is exactly the kind of looking that lets you begin to see auras. Practicing with a Magic Eye book trains your eyes to do it on demand.

Then try it on a person. The easiest setup is someone speaking several feet away in front of a neutral background. Look softly around the center of their face with that same relaxed Magic Eye gaze. Most people see light around the person at first, not colors, and that's exactly right. That's how I see them too.

The real secret: make it about them

Here's what surprises people. I have the best success seeing auras when I'm not trying to. When I'm fully present with someone, listening intently, tuned in to who they really are, that's when it appears. When it's about the other person and not about improving my own skill, the gift comes easily.

That calm, present state is a skill you can build on its own. My no-nonsense guide to meditation is a great place to practice it. And if you're wondering whether those subtle impressions you get are real or imagined, I dig into exactly that in my podcast episode Is It Signal or Is It Noise?

So before you practice, ask yourself why you want this. Is it just a cool ability, or is it to help and understand people more deeply? Get clear on that first. The second motivation is the one that opens the door.
