Am I an Empath, or Just Tired? The Signs I'd Check First

If you keep wondering, "Am I an empath?", look at how you feel around other people. An empath picks up other people's emotions and stress and feels them as if they were their own. If you walk into a room and instantly feel heavy, or a crowd leaves you worn out, you probably are one.

The good news is that you don't have to be a victim of other people's energy. You can learn to protect yourself, and I'll show you three simple ways to do it.

What is an empath?

An empath is someone who is especially sensitive to the emotions of people around them, noticing subtle shifts in mood or tension, often without realizing it is happening.

So on top of your own stress, that sensitivity can feel tiring, especially when you haven’t learned to separate what you notice from what you need to take responsibility for. Some people call this being energetically sensitive.

If that's you, you've probably spent most of your life doing it without knowing there was a name for it. (I promise, nothing is wrong with you.)

Am I an empath? Signs to check

There are ten common signs. The clearest one is feeling heavy or drained around other people for no reason you can name.

Here are the signs you are an empath that I'd check first.

  1. You walk into a room and instantly feel heavy. Nothing has happened yet and nobody has said a word, but you're already picking up everyone else's energy.

  2. People bring you their problems. Friends do it, and so does the stranger next to you in line.

  3. Crowds wear you out. A busy store or a full house can leave you drained for the rest of the day (even when you had a good time).

  4. Saying no is hard for you. You'd rather take on one more thing than let somebody down, and then you wonder why you're so tired.

  5. You get a strong feeling about a person or a place right away. That's your inner guidance talking, and it’s worth noticing, while giving yourself time to learn more.

  6. Other people’s stress stays on your mind. You care about what they’re going through and may find yourself trying to solve things that aren’t yours to solve.

  7. You need quiet time by yourself before you feel like you again.

  8. You feel what everybody expects of you. When someone wants things to go a certain way, you notice, and you work hard to make it happen for them.

  9. Being outside settles you. A walk in the fresh air with your feet on the ground and you feel steadier.

  10. You take on someone's mood without realizing it. You were fine this morning, and now you're cranky or sad and can't say why.

If several of these sound familiar, learning to understand your sensitivity and set clear boundaries can help you use it well.

Why do empaths get so worn out?

Empaths get worn out because being sensitive to other people’s emotions is tiring, especially when it happens without your awareness. You may find yourself feeling drained or overwhelmed without understanding why. For some people, recognizing this sensitivity is the first step toward learning how to manage it.

Your energy body and your physical body are interconnected. When your physical body is depleted, your energy field weakens and you become more vulnerable to absorbing negative energy from others. This is what people mean by empath overwhelm.

Expectations are another big drain. When you believe things need to go a certain way, or that the people around you need to behave a certain way, you can create extra tension and frustration.

Here's an example from my own family. My husband cooks great Chinese food. A few years ago, that's what the kids wanted for our holiday dinner instead of the traditional turkey and all the trimmings. So that became our new tradition. It works for everyone, it's delicious, and it's a lot less stressful.

You're not stuck repeating what's always been done.

Then there's trying to do everything yourself. When you're depleted, you have nothing left to give, to yourself or anyone else. It's okay to ask for help (it helps other people feel needed and wanted too).

How do you protect your energy as an empath?

Three simple techniques help: grounding, zipping up your energy field (about 10 seconds), and turning down your sensitivity dial.

Ground yourself

This is the most important technique for staying centered when life gets chaotic.

Close your eyes if you can (or just soften your gaze if you're in public) and take a deep breath. Visualize roots growing from the bottom of your feet, going down through the floor, through the foundation, and deep into the earth.

Now visualize the healing energy of the earth coming back up through those roots, through your feet and legs, up through your body, and out through the top of your head, connecting you to the heavens above.

You can do this anywhere, even standing in line at the grocery store. Nobody needs to know. When you're grounded, you're in your own energy instead of being tossed around by everyone else's.

Zip yourself up

This is one of my favorite quick protection techniques. It "zips up" your energy field so you don't absorb the stress around you.

With one hand, trace a line a few inches out from your body, starting at your root chakra (the base of your spine) and moving up the centerline of your body all the way to your bottom lip. Picture zipping up a jacket.

Then visualize a bubble of light all around you, above your head and below your feet. Love and positive energy pass right through it, and other people's stress stays on the outside.

Do this before a family dinner or a difficult conversation. It takes about 10 seconds, so it’s easy to use whenever needed.

Turn down the dial

Picture a little knob, the kind on a radio. This knob represents how much of the emotions and energy around you you’re quietly absorbing, often without even realizing it. This is your sensitivity dial, and chances are it’s turned up too high, you need it on low. In your mind’s eye just gently turn it down, way down.

Then take a slow breath and bring your attention back to your own body. You can still notice the people around you. You just don't need to take on what belongs to them.

The beauty of this visualization is that you can use it anywhere: at a social gathering, in a busy store, doctor’s office, or even church. No special position or movement needed. Only you will know you’re adjusting the intensity.

Let that little knob remind you that your sensitivity doesn’t have to run the show. You have choices about where your attention goes and what you take on. You can care without carrying.

What helps an empath day to day?

Four basics keep your energy field strong: regular movement, enough sleep, nourishing food, and less caffeine, sugar, and alcohol.

You already know this stuff. But when life gets busy, these basics are often the first things to go.

  • Get regular exercise (even just walking)

  • Get enough sleep (your energy field repairs itself during deep sleep)

  • Eat healthy, nourishing food

  • Take it easy on caffeine, sugar, and alcohol (they all lower your vibration)

Quiet time counts too, and a simple meditation practice is one easy way to get it.

Give yourself permission to say no to the extras. Listen to and follow your inner guidance, and remember that it's okay (essential, really) to have healthy boundaries. Keep your energy light by keeping your commitments light.

One more thing that shifts your energy fast is kindness. Compliment the cashier or let someone go ahead of you in line. It raises their energy and yours.

Do you have to absorb everyone's stress?

You don't have to. With daily practice, grounding and zipping up keep you in your own energy, even at a crowded family gathering.

If you're an empath, you've probably spent most of your life absorbing other people's emotions and stress without even realizing it. You don't have to live like that.

Practice these techniques and use them daily, especially before a big family gathering or any stressful stretch. They work.

Protecting your energy is how you stay healthy and balanced, and how you show up for the people you love.
